They celebrated the time when God's angel passed over their houses and spared the firstborn son in every household where the blood of a lamb was put around the door as God had commanded. Every Passover from then on, the Jews sacrificed lambs to remember God's saving them by the lambs' blood. Jesus, knowing everything that would happen to him, told his disciples that he was going to Jerusalem, where he would be sacrificed by being crucified.

Judas, one of Jesus' disciples, went to them and said he would help them get Jesus if they would pay him. Judas had been a dishonest disciple - he was in charge of the moneybag, but he stole from it.

As the soldiers tied Jesus, Peter pulled out his sword and cut off the ear of Malchus, one of the Jewish leaders' servants. Jesus said, "Put the sword away! Don't you know that I could ask the Father for an army of angels to defend me? But I must obey my Father and do what he told me to do, as it has been written before in the Scriptures." Then Jesus healed the man's ear, and soon all the disciples ran away.

After three hours, Jesus cried out, "It is finished! Father, into your hands I give my spirit." Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. When he died, there was an earthquake, and the large curtain in the Jewish temple that separated the presence of God from the people was torn in two, from the top down. This showed that God now wanted everyone who believed in him and his Son Jesus to come directly into his presence.
