William Bates (1625-1699), an English Puritan Divine educated at Cambridge & Kings College was a contemporary of Thomas Manton and Richard Baxter and known as the Queen's Puritan. Held in high respect in his day, he was one of the commissioners to the Savoy Conference in 1660 for reviewing the Liturgy. Declining a deanery at the Restoration, Dr. Bates continued to edify the church through his writings.
