Tidak seperti agama lain yang mengajarkan bahwa seseorang sudah dapat pahala jika dia membaca kitab sucinya (walau tidak mengerti apa yang dibacanya), kekristenan menekankan bukan pada pengetahuan (yang diperoleh dari mendengar atau membaca), melainkan pada aplikasi (atau melakukan).

Yesus pun menekankan hal yang sama yakni untuk melakukan dan bukan hanya mendengar (Yohanes 12:47).

Memang firman Allah yang kita baca/dengar, tidak semua bisa menjadi rhema dalam diri kita. Beberapa penyebab yang mengakibatkan hal tersebut, antara lain : kebodohan rohani, kesombongan rohani, penolakan diri, lingkungan, dan bisa juga karena pengaruh setan (baca perumpamaan tentang seorang penabur dan artinya pada Matius 13:1-23)

Jika pada saat mendengar/membaca firman, kita kurang mengerti, maka renungkanlah (Yosea 1:8) dan mintalah hikmat pada Allah yang mengeluarkan firman itu.

Firman yang telah kita mengerti, patrikan dalam hati kita dan lakukanlah. Maka firman tsb. kemudian menjadi rhema dalam diri kita sehingga dalam kehidupan kita sehari2 firman itu dapat memberikan :
motivasi (agar tetap bersemangat)
inspirasi (agar tetap berkarya)
kekuatan (agar dapat menghadapi masalah/tantangan)
peringatan dini (agar terhindar dari kesalahan/dosa)
keyakinan (agar teguh menghadapi dakwaan setan)

Bak seorang yang belajar berenang, kepandaiannya tidak akan bertambah jika dia tidak terus menerus berlatih berenang. Begitupun dalam melakukan firman, tidak akan menjadi kebiasaan dalam diri kita, jika kita tidak mulai melakukan. Belajar taat melakukan firman, karena ketaatan tidak didapat dalam sekejab.
